Along the River
Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at 9:39PM
Route 12...treacherous...no shoulder at all...my little plastic helmet seems hardly armor enough as the tandem tankers and the lumbering lumber-trucks roar past about six inches from my left shoulder. Departed at dawn to beat most of the day-time traffic. Didn’t get off my bike for the first forty miles...to give you a sense of my general urgency to get the leg done quick. Stopped in Lowell...another damned RV park--weigh stations of excess...met three retired people also cycling across the country; made me feel a sight less heroic. I'll take the bulk of the climb on tomorrow...end in Powell...over the pass on Friday morning and then race down into Missoula.

Tyler.. I am glad to hear that you are in Lowell.... that stretch you rode today is pretty hairy... and with the construction along the way between Kamiah and Kooskia it was likely a thrash for you.... so happy you are safe and sound... .. the ride tomorrow over the Lolo along the Lochsa is supposed to be pretty spectacular with the rapids beside the road... take care... we are riding along with you in spirit.... best john
Hi Tyler, I have been making arrangements to travel to Missoula and meet you. I have told you I am an EMT. I was wondering if you have heard of Psych First Aid. I read Rule Number Two by Heidi Squier Kraft a little over a year ago. I saw she is working in the U.S. Navy Combat Stress Control Program. In 2007 a Combat Opertational Stress Control Conference was conducted. The proceeding are posted on the internet. I learned about an effort by LCDR Robert Marietta to teach corpsmen some skills regarding psycological injuries. I have been talking up Psych First Aid to anyone who will listen. Anyway, I have also made arrangements to run with Missoula Emergency Services on Sunday to gain proficiency in my skills. Angels Flying too close to the ground.

Hope the ride over Lolo went well. Glad to know that you are meeting good people along the way. Folks here in Wenatchee keep asking if I've heard from you and I tell them they should check out this Journal!
